Discipleship

How we follow Jesus

Jesus is our shepherd (John 10:11). And yet we need one another in order to learn from each other.

Discipleship happens in different ways

People come from different places and are at different points in their lives. That is why over the years we have gained different experiences of what helps them.

New to faith

Anyone who has just decided to live with Jesus is, figuratively speaking, taken by the hand for a while – if they want this. Paul writes that he first gave believers milk rather than solid food (1 Corinthians 3:2). In this way, at the beginning you receive what you need right now in order to grow.

For us this includes a foundations course in the faith (Colossians 2:6–7), brothers and sisters you can ask questions (2 Timothy 2:2), and pastoral care to honestly go through your own life before God (James 5:16).

A new start in everyday life

For people with a broken background it helps a great deal to live with brothers and sisters for a while, in a flat or very close by. In this way they can take their bearings in everyday life from people who have been walking with Jesus for longer.

For a few months

A season with us

In recent years, people from Germany and abroad who are already further along in their faith have repeatedly come to live with us for a while. They deliberately choose a season set apart to learn, to find rest and to experience community. Most stay for a few months.

Learning for a lifetime

Learning never stops. We keep needing role models, and we need one another as friends.

This happens in everyday life: in our shared life, when we admonish and encourage one another in life’s challenges (1 Thessalonians 5:11), and when we share experiences, time and possessions with one another (Acts 2:44–45).

That is discipleship too.
